The John Berne School is named after a street kid from France who lived at a time shortly after the revolution. Jean-Baptiste Berne was a child with problems similar to those that today’s children face: he didn't have a father, he was orphaned, and he didn’t fit into normal school life.
St. Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of the Marist Brothers, took in Jean-Baptiste to look after him as his own. His trust was betrayed many times, but still Champagnat persisted. Eventually Jean-Baptiste became a Marist Brother himself, but unfortunately died at a young age.
